The Bupa Foundation board

The Bupa Foundation is run by a board, which meets quarterly to consider applications.

Dame Deirdre Hine became chairman of the Bupa Foundation in 2004. The chair and the majority of the governors are from external bodies. They provide expertise across a range of research and clinical areas. They are:

  • Professor David Oliver - consultant physician and clinical director at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, Reading
  • Professor Hugh Montgomery – consultant intensivist at the Whittington Hospital
  • Dr Judy Evans - consultant plastic surgeon, the Nuffield Hospital, Plymouth
  • Mr Chris Hasluck - principal research fellow, Institute for Employment Research, University of Warwick
  • Professor Tony Kendrick - professor of primary medical care and director of Community Clinical Sciences Division, Aldermoor Health Centre
  • Professor Parveen Kumar - professor of clinical medical education, Queen Mary College, Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry
  • Professor Jennie Popay - professor of sociology and public health, Institute for Health Research, University of Lancaster
  • Professor Mary Watkins - deputy vice chancellor, University of Plymouth
  • Professor John MacFie - professor of surgery, Postgraduate Medical Institute, University of Hull
  • Professor Stephen Duffy - Professor of Cancer Screening, Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine, London

The following three governors are employed by Bupa and sit on the board because of their expertise in the Bupa Foundation's areas of focus. They are:

Professor Philip Poole-Wilson

Professor Poole-Wilson served as a governor of the Bupa Foundation from 1996 until his death in March 2009. During this time he made a significant contribution to the Foundation in addition to his other great achievements in cardiology and the medical world generally.

He will be sorely missed by the Bupa Foundation Board and staff, not only for for his thoughtful and incisive analysis but even more importantly for his outstanding personal qualities.

Most recently he championed the concept of seed corn grants and had a decisive influence on the planning of this new grants stream to be introduced later in 2009.

He will be sorely missed but this scheme will be a fitting memorial to our valued colleague and friend.

Officers of the Foundation are:

  • Mr Kevin Taylor - secretary of the Foundation
  • Lee Saunders - Registrar to the Bupa Foundation.
  • Teresa Morris - Executive Officer of the Foundation
