Professor David Oliver

Professor David Oliver was born in Manchester, trained at Oxford and Cambridge, worked in junior doctor posts largely in London and the South East and is now a Consultant Physician and Clinical Director at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, Reading. From 2004 to 2009 he was also Senior Lecturer in Elderly Care Medicine at the University of Reading and whilst now back in the NHS full time he is Visiting Professor of Medicine for Older People at City University in London.

From 1998 to 2004 he was a consultant and clinical director at Queen Mary's Hospital where he set up a variety of services for older people. He is a well published researcher especially in the field of fall and injury prevention, ethical and legal issues in the care of older people and health services for older people and has lectured nationally and internationally and edited the falls and bone health section of Age and Ageing.

He is the national secretary of the British Geriatrics Society, Editor of its newsletter Chair of its falls and bone health section, acting clinical advisor to the department of health and has worked closely with bodies such as the healthcare commission, national patient safety agency and social care institute for excellence as well as advising the Australian Safety Council, Taiwanese Veterans Administration and Hong Kong Department of Health and providing input to numerous national consultations. He has frequently appeared in news and print media commenting on the care of older people. In addition to his initial medical degree and doctorate, he also has Masters Degrees in Health Management, Health Leadership, Health Care Ethics and Law and Diploma in Medical Education.
