Judging criteria

There is tremendous competition for Bupa Foundation medical research grants and, before deciding which proposals to support, the governors take into account:

  • the originality of the research proposal
  • quality of the study design/methods
  • the long-term implications of the research proposal and the likelihood of success
  • the proposed statistical analysis (where appropriate)
  • relevance to clinical practice
  • relevance to public health
  • priority for funding

At the closing date for proposals, details of applications received are sent to the Bupa Foundation governors for scoring on a scale of zero (poor) to ten (excellent). Following that, the shortlisted applications are sent for external peer review. Finally, the Bupa Foundation board decides which projects to support.
